Celebrating Black History Month at Southampton Row - Team ROC
October in the UK marks Black History Month and the celebrations within SHP took many shapes.
Staff at Southampton Row engaged residents by decorating the reception noticeboard with the fantastic mural showcasing the varied activities in the SHP BHM Activities Pack.
Up in Flat 4 there was a fantastic cooking event showcasing the cooking talents of resident Gurpreet Chana, who having lived in the USA for a number of years fell in love with the Southern Afro Caribbean food culture. A menu of Cornbread, Gumbo, and Sweet Potato Pie was co-produced. Ingredients gathered and an afternoon of cooking was undertaken with fantastic engagement from the residents and the staff who were drawn into flat 4 with the wonderful smells and aromas floating around the building.
The end result was beyond amazing, the food was delicious and there was a lot of talk about the positive impact and the influence Afro Caribbean food has had on the world.
The photos below show the day as it unfolded.
Many thanks to the residents and the staff for an amazing event and to everyone involved in acknowledging BHM we at Southampton Row had a ball.
